Hey Wellness Warriors!
The word wellness seems to be everywhere these days. Wellness is the active pursuit of activities, choices and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health. It is not a passive or static state but rather an “active pursuit” that is associated with intentions, choices and actions as we work toward an optimal state of health and wellbeing. Wellness is an individual pursuit — we have self-responsibility for our own choices, behaviors and lifestyles — but it is also significantly influenced by the physical, social and cultural environments in which we live.
Wellness is important because it encompasses all aspects of our lives and is essential for our overall health and happiness. It is a holistic concept that is multidimensional, including six dimensions of wellness: physical, mental, emotional, social, community and spiritual wellness. When we prioritize wellness, we make choices that improve our quality of life and help us achieve a state of balance and harmony.
Physical wellness includes things like exercise, nutrition, and rest, which are essential for maintaining a healthy body.
Mental wellness involves our ability to cope with stress, manage our emotions, and maintain a positive outlook.
Emotional wellness is about our ability to express our feelings and connect with others in a meaningful way.
Social wellness involves having a supportive network of friends and family, as well as being able to navigate different social situations.
Community wellness includes contributing to your environment/community, how to get the most out of school and work.
Spiritual wellness involves finding meaning and purpose in life and having a sense of connection to something larger than oneself.
We all know we need to be well however the action doesn’t always follow. Do you have a ‘Wellness Why’? Creating your ‘Wellness Why’ means defining your reasons and motivations for prioritizing your own well-being. This can be a powerful tool to help you stay motivated and committed to your wellness goals.
Your ‘Wellness Why’ may be different from someone else’s, as everyone has their own unique set of values, goals, and life experiences that shape their priorities. Some possible reasons why you might prioritize your wellness could include:
To improve your physical health: Perhaps you want to feel more energized, improve your fitness level, or manage a chronic condition.
To reduce stress and improve mental health: Maybe you want to learn how to manage stress more effectively, reduce anxiety, or improve your mood.
To enhance your relationships: You might prioritize wellness in order to strengthen your connections with loved ones, improve your communication skills, or become a better listener.
To find greater meaning and purpose in life: Perhaps you’re seeking a deeper sense of fulfillment or want to align your actions with your values and beliefs.
Whatever your reasons, taking the time to reflect on your ‘Wellness Why’ can help you stay focused and committed to your goals, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. It can also help you make intentional choices that align with your values and priorities, leading to a greater sense of purpose and satisfaction in life.
